How it works

From first message to the right support

No appointment to book or scheduled session to wait for. A young person opens Sonar, sends a message, and starts a conversation with a Wellbeing Coach, a real human trained to support them.

They can talk through what’s happening, step away when they need to, and return later without starting over.

How it works

Built around how
life actually happens

This generation grew up texting. They often process feelings in the same place they manage much of their lives: on a screen, in writing, and on their own schedules.

Sonar makes support available in those moments. A conversation can last a few minutes or continue over time, fitting naturally into a young person’s day rather than requiring them to alter theirs.

Provide youth and families with immediate, text-based support outside clinic walls — nights, weekends, school breaks, and in-betweens.

How it works

The people
behind every conversation

Every message is written by a trained Wellbeing Coach selected for their ability to build trust, maintain clear boundaries, and help youth make sense of their feelings.

Our Coaches bring backgrounds across psychology, social work, youth programs, and crisis-support settings. They work within a defined nonclinical role and are supported by Sonar’s Clinical Governance and Safety Team.

What wellbeing coaching looks like

Young people don’t need to know exactly what kind of help they need before reaching out. They can start with whatever is on their mind.

The Coach helps them put words to what is happening, consider another perspective, figure out what might help next. Depending on the conversation, that could mean practicing a coping skill, preparing for a difficult conversation, breaking a problem into smaller steps, or simply feeling heard.

Sonar’s approach draws from evidence-informed practices such as motivational interviewing, CBT- and DBT-informed skills, mindfulness, and grounding. Coaches do not diagnose, prescribe, or provide psychotherapy.

And it’s more than a one-time conversation. Sonar gives young people a place they can return to.

Coaches carry forward relevant context, follow up on what matters, and help young people keep moving forward as situations change. That continuity makes it easier to build trust and creates more opportunities to recognize when someone may benefit from additional support.

How it works

Safety built into every conversation

Most Sonar conversations are about everyday wellbeing. When something more serious arises, Coaches do not manage it alone.

Sonar combines human judgment, structured protocols, and experienced oversight to help Coaches respond consistently when needs change.

Sonar's safety team maintains visibility into every conversation.

About us

A clear path when more support is needed

Sonar helps young people move from conversation to the right next step without losing momentum. When additional care could help, Coaches can reinforce referrals, involve the appropriate adult, or coordinate warm handoffs into your existing network.
